General public awareness survey

An online survey commissioned in April 2009, was responded to by 5010 members of the general public across the UK, France, Germany, Italy and Spain.

The aim of the survey was to discover how much people knew about Parkinson’s and where the gaps in people’s knowledge are.

Supported by a Teva Pharmaceuticals Limited and H. Lundbeck A/S, the results of the survey paint a troubling picture of the lack of knowledge and understanding of Parkinson’s. Over half of Europeans did not correctly identify Parkinson’s as a neurological condition that affects movement and 77% did not recognise the inability to move - one of the cardinal symptoms - as being a problem for people with of Parkinson’s.

The findings in the Executive summary highlight the great need to raise awareness of Parkinson’s Disease and demonstrate how essential the EPDA is in making information accessible to the public.
